DIY - Barefoot Baby Bloom Booties

Try saying that three times fast!

Aren't these the cutest!? They are super soft, and super cute! Make one in every color to pair up with a little cute outfit. LOVE!

What you’ll need: (Note: I made this pair to fit just right on Jules (2.5 months). So you’ll need to adjust the measurements for your kiddos feeties)
  • T-shirt (I used one purchased from Michael’s, on sale for $2)
  • Glue Gun
  • Coordinating Needle & thread
  • Coordinating felt (you only need a little for each shoe, so go digging through your scrap pile!)
For this project, I wanted to do AS LITTLE sewing as possible, so for the straps, I trimmed off the finished hem of the t-shirt (be sure to cut as close to the hem line as possible). Each shoe will need two-3 inch straps.

Cut out a coordinating felt circle (approx 2.5 inches) and sew on both straps (I think the picture better describes the process)

Next, create a 5 petal flower template on a piece of paper. My flower ended up being approx. 2.5 inches.  Pin the template on your t-shirt and cut out 18 flowers (9 for each shoe).

Take one petal and fold it in half. Then fold it in half again. Do this with 4 petals. Arrange each petal onto your felt circle so that the corners meet in the middle. Now hot glue the puppies on. You’ll want to also hot glue each petal fold to itself… again… the picture probably describes it better than I can.

Now take your next 4 petals and fold them the same way. This time when gluing them on, rotate your felt circle so that the new petals are lying across ½ of 2 bottom petals (yes, yes, just look at the picture)

Take your last petal piece and fold it in half. Roll one corner into the other, kind of creating a cone shape. This will create the bud of the flower. Hot glue the bud to the middle. Take the top layer of petals and add a dab of glue to the center and adhere it to the bud. This will give your flower more fluff and body.

And there you have it! SOOOO adorable! I could probably make 10 pairs outta 1 XL youth t-shirt! Less than $0.20 a pair! It would look SOOO cute on a diaper cake!

  5. Mom2fur: They are SUPER soft! With using the hot glue to attach the petals, I was afraid it would make the bloom too hard, but it doesn't at all! Debating about making a pair for myself to walk around the house in!! :D

  8. This is soooo adorable! Love it. Especially as I think it's a bit ridiculous putting shoes on babies that obviously don't move. hehe. This is a cuter alternative.

  10. @Melissa: It's never too late to make one for your little girl!! You could always just make the flower and hot glue it to a cute pair of toddler sandals/flip flops!

  14. Hi,

I am so excited to find this little baby foot adornment defined so that I can make it for my soon-to-be-born granddaughter. Looking at the photos I assume that the band the flower is attached to is the same stretch, satin-faced elastic that headbands are created from. However, I cannot tell whether the band is sewn in a cross strap like the infinity symbol or if it is just stitched at the center of the figure 8 as it edges touche. It would also help to know approximately how long to cut the elastic, whether the lobes of elastic (foot and ankle) are of equal size and the best way to mate the ends of the elastic without making a thick overlay junction beneath the flower.

I would really appreciate some specific details regarding the type of elastic and how to measure and create it for the beautiful blooms.

Thanks for sharing such adorable ideas. I love these!!!

  16. Your tutorial was a little confusing until I realized that the felt circle was not meant to be the sole of the shoe, but that you were supposed to build the flower on it. Other than that, thank you for the tutorial. I am in the process of making a pair for my 4 month old and will be using the flower pattern for other things in the future.

  19. Darling. I think Ren has a good suggestion to use the satiny, foldover elastic for the straps instead of tshirt strips. would be thinner and more 'finished' looking. might be hard to match colors, though. I've had great success ordering the foldover elastic on etsy from 2 or 3 difference companies. love that stuff. I'm planning to adapt these for American Girl dolls. too cute, thanks so muchf or your tutorial!!

  20. My only recomendation is to sew rather than glue... For adults or dolls, gluing is ok but for infants I don't think glue is the best option... Safety first, we don't need our little ones choking on a fallen petal.

    1. As long as you do the dots on the smaller side it should work fine

  22. I love it , they are so cute, but after looking at the way you made them. I got 1 change for you . The Trim Straps (YOURs" trimmed off the finished hem of the t-shirt (be sure to cut as close to the hem line as possible). Each shoe will need two-3 inch straps) My idea Change it to TWO - 6 inch straps put soft stretch elastic in the hem pull it to the 3 inches and sew and they would fit the baby's foot longer and or made the straps in 2 2/1 inch strips to put velcro on them make two for each one, can you tell i'm an old costume maker and seamdress. I'm making mine I think with the velcro. but thank you so much your ideas is great.

    1. Wow!! These shoes are absolutely gorgeous!! Gonna make one for my lil 6 mo old right away!! But i needed to figure one thing out... Im a novice at this, and have been racking my brains to figure out what you tried to explain about the trim straps in the post above.. Could you please be so kind to re-explain it to me.. Maybe in a simpler version? Much appreciated!

  23. Does anyone have measurement for all different ages like newborn 0-3 3-6 6-9 9-12???

    1. If you use strips of baby tights instead of the tshirt for the straps they will fit any size baby foot! I usually make headbands out of the baby tights and they stretch to fit my head comfortably and then shrink back to fit their head, plus I know it's soft and gentle enough for my twins little heads and feet =)

  24. use an old tank top. the straps are more elastic and you dont have to cut off any edges! yay! thanks so much for this. turned out great and super easy!

  25. I made a pair of these today for my baby's 9 month portraits. They came out so good, if I do say so myself. My husband was very impressed. I am not good at sewing or anything like that, but these were very easy to make. Thanks for the detailed instructions and pictures. I couldn't find any felt in the color I wanted, so I just used another piece of the shirt I was using, worked fine. Thanks again.

  29. I've been working on making these for my daughter and im pretty lazy.. so I was thinking, what if you used hair elastics as the straps? An infants legs and feet are pretty small so I don't think it would be too tight.. Any thoughts?

    1. Hi! sorry for the delay in responding...

I've made a few using flat hair elastics. They might be a bit on the bigger side for newborns, but will fit a 9+ months. They would even fit my almost 2 year old. (but I guess this would also depend on what brand of hair elastics you buy)
